Martin wrote the initial story herself.<\/p>\n \n\tThe result was an intricately designed visual narrative. She created a moving story board of sorts, cut and edited with music and dialogue to get a visual idea of the film. It was scripted, then cast with friends of the house.<\/p>\n \n\tDafoe, who has been involved with the Prada Group for 30 years, was the first to join. Verdi Visconti suggested the actor.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cYou\u2019re not going to say no to that,\u201d Martin joked. \u201cAnd then it became a puzzle.\u201d They filled out the glamorous world with young stars in the Miu Miu universe.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cIt all felt like a dream,\u201d Liang said. \u201cWe were in this beautiful castle, all dressed up, running around and having a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tLiang plays a singer, and though she doesn\u2019t sing, Martin created deep backstories and monologues for each character. She also wrote each actor a welcome letter to make them feel at home on set.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cIt came so naturally to her,\u201d Liang said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it was her directorial debut. She worked like magic.\u201d Liang added that she was so obsessed with the costumes that she tried to buy some from the set, including a favorite belt from her look.<\/p>\n \n\tMartin approached with her usual detail. \u201cPreparation is the only way I know how to keep my rather large amount of anxiety at bay,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\tWillem Dafoe and Jasmin Savoy Brown in\u201dGrande Envie.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n \n\tThe team shot for three days, and despite the summery shots, it was actually filmed in January.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cIt was cold, but it was astounding to be somewhere with such history, like it really felt like [with the film] that what we were bringing to life was something that actually happened there, like Catherine captured something real in the space,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n \n\tBrown shot with Dafoe, who impressed her with his genuineness and generosity, despite being such a seasoned actor and world-famous star.<\/p>\n \n\tThere was an unscripted moment. \u201cIf you watch closely, you\u2019ll see we almost shared a smooch once or twice, but we didn\u2019t,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s my story \u2014 the time I almost kissed Willem Dafoe.\u201d<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\tDiana Silvers attends \u201cGrande Envie\u201d Miu Miu luncheon.<\/span><\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGetty Images for Miu Miu<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n \n\tMartin\u2019s first cut was \u201cvery linear,\u201d she said. But she happens to have a great coach, with husband and longtime collaborator Baz Luhrmann as an adviser. He encouraged her to both tighten it and let loose.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201c\u2019You\u2019ve got to just make it more poetic and less focused on trying to hit all the story points,\u2019 he advised. \u2018Just go crazy. Let yourself be free and just tell the story how your heart wants to tell it.\u2019 And I really took his note, and it came to life in a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tWith editor Annika Damon, Martin approached from a new perspective. \u201cWe put together something that was so much better than the original idea, more lyrical and fit so much better with the work.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tDue to budget constraints, Martin wasn\u2019t able to get the rights to the music she initially wanted. She turned to Elliott Wheeler and Jamieson Shaw, who worked on Luhrmann\u2019s \u201cElvis.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThey created a piece that was much more magical and a better fit for the film.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cSomething I really have learned over the years is that obstacles or people saying no or things not going your way, or critique is so helpful,\u201d she said. The notes can be hard to take, but \u201cthere\u2019s usually a kernel of truth inside it.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cAs I get older, I\u2019m actually finding my ego is less connected to criticism,\u201d she said. She\u2019s also aware of the things she doesn\u2019t know and leaned on director of photography Mandy Walker for \u201ccrossing the line\u201d shots that she found challenging. It was a creative team effort, all in a castle.<\/p>\n \n\tThe wardrobe was crafted entirely from upcycled garments from the collection. The collection with Miu Miu was more than a reason to make a film; it was a chance to reckon with fashion\u2019s role in damaging the environment.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cIt becomes kind of overwhelming, and it feels like no one can make a difference,\u201d she said, of being aware of the scope. \u201cWe\u2019re all going to just be buried in thousands of T-shirts and discarded jeans.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tShe approached the collection with the idea of creating value. \u201cI just love the idea of taking something imminently disposable, like a T-shirt, and something that we assign value to, like vintage lace, and making a precious object,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about taking something from the past and reinventing it for the future in a meaningful way.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe result is a collection with patchworked jeans, recut silhouettes and vintage fabrics reimagined for a new era.<\/p>\n \n\tThat philosophy has extended into her personal life, too, and she now prefers to have something altered or adapted instead of buying something new. \u201cI\u2019m investing in craft, and in a garment that will have a longer life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\tDianna Agron attends \u201cGrande Envie\u201d Miu Miu luncheon..<\/span><\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGetty Images for Miu Miu<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n \n\tSo will she direct again?
