The 39-year-old Happy Valley<\/em> star was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 22-years-old and has previously discussed how he has learned to manage it over the years. <\/p>\nHowever, during an incident at the GQ<\/em> Men of the Year Awards in November last year, \u201cpandemonium\u201d broke loose as the star realised his blood sugar levels had dropped drastically. <\/p>\nThe Grantchester<\/em> actor, who is rumoured to be in the running to be the next James Bond, had taken insulin before the event, expecting a carbohydrate-heavy meal. However, he was served a \u201cfashion dinner\u201d with smoked trout and no bread, before a lengthy wait for the main course.<\/p>\n\u201cI was dripping with sweat,\u201d Norton told the Off Menu <\/em>podcast. \u201cI am on the high table sitting opposite Nicole Kidman and there are cameras everywhere: if I stand up, it’s really rude.\u201d<\/p>\nNorton became concerned that he would pass out and alerted a waiter nearby: \u201cI said, \u2018I’m diabetic. You need to help me. I need some orange juice really quickly, please.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cThat caused pandemonium to break loose. I was looking really ill at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n

Norton was diagnosed with diabetes when he was 22 (Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nStaff brought Norton some orange juice and a Pret chocolate bar, as well as a bowl of hot potatoes during Law\u2019s speech at the ceremony as they tried to support him.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomeone backstage had cooked me a bowl of potatoes. Everyone down the table is going, \u2018Why are you\u2026?\u2019 I just looked like a potato-loving glutton. In the middle of the speech as well!\u201d<\/p>\n
He explained: \u201cIt’s fraught when you’re eating out. You can’t time the meal exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n
Norton said he now wears a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to track his blood sugar levels and explained he would undergo bouts of hypoglycemia or \u201chypos\u201d overnight. <\/p>\n
\u201c[I’d] wake up in a sweaty mess, discombobulated, disoriented, scared. If you’re with a partner, it’s quite scary for them because often hypos are serious things. You lose your mind a bit,\u201d he said of the experience.<\/p>\n
He added: \u201cNow, way before that happens, we get a beep, which wakes us up. Since then, my glucose is just more controlled. I sleep so much better.\u201d<\/p>\n
