She said that the pressure was down to starting out in TV aged 22 and feeling defined by her youth.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of my life being open about my age had been unthinkable,\u201d she wrote in the Daily Mail<\/em>. Her husband Ian knew the truth and \u201cshrugged off\u201d the deception.<\/p>\n\u201cI, too, believed my behaviour was harmless, something many women did in a society that tries to write us off once we reach a \u2018certain age\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Adams said the ruse began in her thirties, when she \u201cdodged, deflected or outright lied when the subject came up\u201d. <\/p>\n
\u201cEven to my own children, Charly, now 23, and Bonnie, 18,\u201d she continued. \u201cIn fact, for years they believed I was a whole decade younger than I actually was.\u201d<\/p>\n
Explaining how she kept up the story with her children, she said: \u201cI’d never given Charly a specific date of birth, but I had claimed her dad \u2013 my partner Ian \u2013 was 10 years my senior, when actually we were both born in 1962.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, one day, her daughter Charly got into a fight with another pupil about her mother\u2019s age, which the friend had googled. <\/p>\n
\u201cCharly was so upset she convinced herself the internet must be wrong,\u201d she continued. \u201cI hated knowing my silly fib had left her defending me against the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adams lied to her children about her age (PA)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nThe incident marked a turning point, with Adams realising that she \u201cowed it to her and to myself to start being honest.\u201d She took her daughter for a hot chocolate in a cafe where she revealed her true age. <\/p>\n
Her daughter did not find it amusing like she\u2019d hope and, \u201cinstead she stared down at her drink and said nothing. I could see she was upset so I changed the subject, but inside I was rattled.\u201d<\/p>\n
The former Strictly <\/em>star said: \u201cI\u2019d always thought of myself as strong and forthright, yet I\u2019d fallen prey to society\u2019s negative messages around older women.\u201d<\/p>\nAdams, who started out in TV aged 22, reflected on the factors that led to the lie, admitting: \u201cI enjoyed being the youngest among my peers; being \u2018ahead of the game\u2019 felt like my trump card.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said this changed as she aged: \u201cBut by the time I was in my thirties and surrounded by a new bevvy of bright young things, I\u2019d already begun to feel a bit past it. Society reinforces that message constantly, particularly for women in the public eye. There\u2019s this sense the moment you hit a certain age, you risk being replaced by someone younger \u2013 no matter your talent.\u201d<\/p>\n
