The Stranger Things<\/em> star, 31, who shares an 11-year-old son named Archie <\/strong>with his ex Akiko Matsuura, said that being a young father made him \u201clearn ethical priorities\u201d early on in his life.<\/p>\n\u201cYou want to give them good experiences and a lot of love and the hard part obviously is distance,\u201d he told Wonderland<\/em> magazine. \u201cBut that\u2019s part of the sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\nHe continued: \u201cBeing a young father, you have to grow up very fast,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cYou\u2019ve got to look after somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n
Heaton and Matsuura met while in the underground rock band Comanechi, which was fronted by Matsuura and formed in 2005.<\/p>\n

He had small roles on TV shows including DCI Banks<\/em>, Vera<\/em> and Casualty<\/em>, before landing his breakthrough role as Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things<\/em>.<\/em><\/p>\nHeaton also reflected on his nine-year relationship with his on-screen love interest and co-star Natalia Dyer, calling it a \u201cgift\u201d to work with his best friend.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo be able to have a shared experience with your partner about the anxiety when you don\u2019t get a job \u2014 I know what that feels like, she knows what that feels like,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The pair started working together on the series before making their red carpet debut as a couple in 2017.<\/p>\n
Dyer has previously spoken about their working relationship, saying: \u201cIt\u2019s an interesting thing to work with somebody who you go home with.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s always really fun. We\u2019re really comfortable with each other, so we can play and feel more free, and we can talk about it before,\u201d she told Refinery29<\/em> in 2019.<\/p>\nHeaton will next appear in HBO\u2019s next installment of Industry<\/em>, about a dysfunctional group of graduates who met working at a London investment bank after the 2008 financial crisis.
