“Nowhere Neat” Blurs Formality with Grunge Flair
System’s Fall 2026 collection, titled “Nowhere Neat,” explored the idea of the well-dressed interloper.
Rather than placing perfection at the center of the collection, creative director Heesoo Kim wanted to play with the idea of those who try, but don’t quite fit in.
The result was a wardrobe defined by imbalance – polished, but with something just a little bit out of place.
Looking to Radiohead’s “Creep,” and its angsty alienation as his key inspiration, the designer added subtle grunge inflections such as plaid flannel shirts, while structured jackets were paired with 1970s-style athletic shorts for an off-kilter silhouette.
Sweatpants sat low on the waist, with hands stuffed in oversized, forward-facing patch pockets, while trousers and jersey bottoms were worn haphazardly and tucked into motorcycle boots. The effect blurred distinctions between formal and casual.
It was also a pushback on “quiet luxury,” Kim said, as he believes that rather than constant aspiration for perfection, one should add old favorites from your existing wardrobe to express individuality.
Texture carried much of that story. Plush faux-fur pullovers and cowls added a sense of play, while knits were deliberately distressed — frayed, moth-bitten and seemingly worn for decades. Knits emerged as a particular strength, from chunky pullovers to a cargo-style knit short in thick yarn.
A chocolate-brown coat in brushed velvet stood out for its lushness, while a traditional striped button-down was reimagined as a puffy, insulating piece hovering between shirt and outerwear.
True outerwear took cues from motocross gear, with padded shoulders and elbows translated onto leather jackets.
Pops of this season’s bright blue, such as on on a fitted varsity jacket, and red accessories punctuated an otherwise muted palette.
Commercially, the collection arrives as System expands its retail footprint. Following the launch of its standalone flagship in Paris, the brand opened a corner in the men’s store at Galeries Lafayette, where sales have topped expectations, Kim said.
The brand is also building across Southeast Asia after System stage a high-profile fashion show in Thailand. The market has since emerged as a key pillar in the its next phase of growth.
