Bergdorf Goodman Launches Design Residency With Gabriella Khalil

Creative director and designer Gabriella Khalil has partnered with Bergdorf Goodman and USM Modular Furniture on a new design residency that signals the retailer’s deeper move into the home and lifestyle space. Launching Thursday and running through August, the initiative will occupy the retailer’s seventh floor, with an accompanying window installation overlooking 58th Street.

Titled “In Good Company,” the residency marks Khalil’s first venture of this kind in a retail setting. The installation blends showroom and interior space, offering shoppers a chance to experience and purchase a curated mix of collectible furniture, vintage pieces and decorative objects.

Khalil aimed to create a space that felt both personal and transportive within Bergdorf Goodman, she told WWD. “I kept coming back to the idea of something that feels both lived-in, where nothing is too precious. It’s about striking a balance between structure and softness, and creating an environment that feels layered over time, almost like it’s been collected rather than designed all at once,” she said.

Khalil’s collaboration with USM builds on a long-standing relationship with the Swiss company known for its modular, functional systems. She has used USM components extensively in previous interior projects, combining the brand’s clean-lined structures with eclectic pieces from different eras.

“USM’s system is so intuitive and timeless, which made it such a strong starting point. I didn’t want to overwork it; rather, it was more about showing how naturally it can live within a space that feels personal and layered. By adding textiles, objects and a bit of softness, the pieces start to feel less like a system and more like part of someone’s everyday environment. It becomes about how adaptable they are and how they can evolve with you over time,” Khalil said.

For the Bergdorf Goodman residency, she integrated USM’s modular designs with vintage furniture from the 1980s and 1990s, curated art and lighting, and carpeting from her upcoming collaboration with Danish design brand EGE.

“Bergdorf Goodman is quintessential New York. It carries a legacy that few places can claim, and for us, it felt like a natural context to position USM, itself long established as a design classic, within a distinctly American cultural setting,” Jon Thorson, CEO of USM Modular Furniture, said, adding that Gabriella Khalil represents a new generation shaping what that landscape looks like today. “What made this partnership feel right is the dialogue between those layers — heritage and evolution, structure, and intuition — all coming together in a way that feels both thoughtful and forward-looking.”

The installation also highlights Bergdorf Goodman’s growing investment in home design. The retailer has been expanding its range beyond fashion to offer a more holistic lifestyle experience, connecting craftsmanship, artistry and storytelling through curated collaborations.

“Partnering with Gabriella Khalil is a natural alignment with our shared commitment to artistry, storytelling and a one-of-a-kind luxury assortment. At Bergdorf Goodman, we consistently cultivate a world where creativity and inspiration converge, offering our clients an experience that is as notable and distinctive in point of view as it is elevated,” Tracy Margolies, President, Bergdorf Goodman, said. “With this collection, Gabriella Khalil brings a thoughtful and deeply personal lens that resonates with our audience and highlights the sense of discovery that defines Bergdorf Goodman as a destination for exceptional luxury experiences.”
